While the Cardinals softball team dropped a rain-suspended game at home against Indianola 18-6 after playing one extra inning in the afternoon, the Newton baseball team lost 5-3 on the road against Gilbert on Monday night.
Gilbert scored one run in the bottom of the second inning, grabbed a 4-3 lead with three runs in the fourth, and added an insurance run in the sixth inning to seal the victory. The Newton baseball team scored all three of their scores in the top of both innings. In a 2-3 effort, Creighton Andrew batted in one run and Cade Bauer drove in two for the Cardinals. Derek Wermager, Landry Rausch, Mason Mendez, and Drew Bauer completed Newton’s seven hits. In addition, the Cardinals had two hitters reach base after being hit by pitches and drew three walks. Three hits, six walks, two hit batters, one player reaching base on an error, and five stolen bases were the sources of Gilbert’s five runs. Newton’s overall record now stands at 4-24 after the defeat.
Monday marked the conclusion of the rain-affected June 23 softball game between the Newton and Indianola teams. The game resumed in the top of the fourth inning with the Indians leading 14-6. The game was ended early by run-rule when Indianola scored four runs in the period and the Cardinals were unable to score. The only Cardinal to receive a hit was Sloan Brodersen, who went 2-2 for Newton with three runs batted in. All but one of the 18 runs scored by the Indians came from their 16 hits. Newton’s record drops to 7-18 for the season and 2-16 in the conference. According to Newton head coach Cory Leiker, the Cardinals softball team will have a good time playing Fort Madison at the University of Iowa’s Bob Pearl Field today.
Few athletes make it to Division One, and few girls get to play on a field like that. Therefore, it is an honor to even set foot on that field.
The Cardinals baseball team will play PCM at home tonight at 7:30 p.m.; live coverage will be available on the KRLS3 Stream starting at 7:15 p.m. This evening’s softball game between Newton and Fort Madison in Iowa City is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
