Norwalk Baseball splits doubleheader at Roosevelt; Warrior softball team falls to Winterset in 9 innings

On Tuesday, the Norwalk summer sports teams had a combined record of 1-2. The softball team lost in extra innings at Winterset, and the Warrior baseball team split a doubleheader against Des Moines Roosevelt.

Norwalk won the nightcap 14–4 after losing the first game in a doubleheader at Roosevelt 4-0. In the opening game, the Warriors made seven mistakes and were shut out on five hits. The offense was paced by Cole Wardlow, who went 2-for-4 and doubled, while Rhylee Schmidt also doubled. Wardlow, who gave up four unearned runs in three innings, took the mound for the loss.

In game two, Norwalk fell behind 1-0 after three innings but rallied with four runs in the fourth and eight in the fifth to take the lead with 16 hits. Wardlow went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three RBI in yet another outstanding game at the plate. Schmidt and Eli Benschoter each went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs, while Brady Wilkening finished 3-for-4 and scored two. Both Xavier Bush and Konner Holtorf added a double. With six strikeouts and just one earned run allowed in four innings, Benschoter won the victory.

As of right moment, the Warriors are 12-14 overall. On Thursday at noon, they will make the trip to Ballard for another doubleheader.

Softball loses by nine.

In a nine-inning game against 4A No. 11 Winterset, the third-ranked Norwalk softball team in Class 4A fell short 6-5, allowing 29 hits in all. In the second inning, the Huskies scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. In the fourth inning, the Warriors matched the game with three runs, and then added another in the sixth to make it 5-5.

Norwalk did not strike out and finished with 13 hits, 12 of which were singles. Bailey Birmingham hit a double and walked to go 3-for-3. Hadley Michael, Cambry Livingston, Maddie Gullion, and Nyah Hulbert each contributed two hits.

Winterset exploited three Warrior mistakes and recorded 16 hits. Norwalk’s pitchers are Leah Crick, Lillian Garvey, and Carly Brewer. After giving up four singles, three walks, and the game-winning run in just two innings, Brewer was declared the loser.

When the Warriors play Ames at home tonight, they will have a 27-4 overall record.
