The event happened outside the Target store at 8601 Research Boulevard, close to Ohlen Road, just before 2:15 p.m. local time. Within minutes of receiving a 9-1-1 call, officers arrived and discovered three people with gunshot wounds. The third died after being taken to a local hospital, while the other two were declared dead at the scene.
Chief Davis did not confirm this at the afternoon conference, and officials did not disclose the victims’ ages or other details, but police first told local media that a child might have been among the victims.
Davis said that the 32-year-old suspect, who has been described as white and has a history of mental health problems, started the rampage by stealing a car in the Target parking lot that was thought to belong to one of the victims and then running away.

The thief crashed the stolen car before robbing a nearby Volkswagen dealership of another vehicle. After being stunned with a Taser, police were able to locate and capture him in South Austin, about eighteen miles from the original murder scene.
Chief Davis said that investigators are looking over the video material that is now accessible, but he did not provide an explanation for the suspect’s motivation. She called the day “very sad for Austin, very sad for us all” and offered her condolences to the victims’ families.

Vehicles parked in the lot have not yet been returned to their owners because the area is still an active crime scene, and law enforcement has recommended the public to use other forms of transportation until further notice. The MoPac Southbound frontage road was partially closed between Executive Center Drive and Anderson Lane, causing traffic congestion; main lanes in both directions are still available.
The tragedy made an already hectic afternoon of back-to-school shopping even more somber. Regarding the tragedy, Target corporate has not yet released a remark.
The investigation is still underway, according to authorities, who are trying to piece together what happened before the shooting and ascertain if it was completely random or had a clear trigger. No charges have been formally announced as of yet.
