US Vice President JD Vances’ summer vacation in the Cotswolds gave rise to a comedy that appears appropriate for a political joke. With his wife, Usha, and their three children, what began as a family vacation in the English countryside has devolved into a village disturbance, police convoys, and—perhaps most embarrassing of all—a purported rejection of service at a neighboring pub owned by Meghan Markle’s florist.
According to allegations in The Daily Mail and entertainment gossip website Popbitch, staff at Charlbury’s The Bull Pub, a hangout for politicians and celebrities, threatened to quit in significant numbers when a reservation for the Vance family was made.
The episode has become the talk of the town in the Cotswolds, where the residents are already displeased with Vance’s vacation. Convoys of police cars and hovering helicopters have been used to escort the vice president, which has annoyed residents and congested minor country roads.
The Bull is accustomed to having high-profile guests (Kamala Harris was there only last year), but the rumor that its employees disregarded JD Vance caused controversy. According to Popbitch, all of the disobedient workers declared that they would not come to work if they were required to serve Vance and his wife. Due to employee complaints and an increase of unfavorable press publicity, the Bull rejected his business.

Conversely, Vance’s team has attempted to minimize the controversy.
Although the Bull was mentioned as a possible lunch choice, a JD Vance representative maintained that the family eventually chose not to go. The Bull never gave any sign that he or his family were not welcome.
Nevertheless, the images are undeniable: Whether intentionally or inadvertently, JD Vance did not enter Meghan Markle’s florist’s pub. Since taking office as vice president in January 2025, JD Vance has also been a contentious figure in Washington. He is now Donald Trump’s closest political ally, despite having previously been a vocal opponent of the president and referred to him as America’s Hitler!

Some claim that his holiday isn’t truly a holiday. The vice president wasn’t only searching for a spot to unwind, according to journalist Helen Kirwan-Taylor, who lives near Dean, where the Vances are staying: No one comes to the British version of the Hamptons to listen to birdsong. There is just one reason why JD Vance has selected the axis of privilege, riches, and power: influence.
Locals appear to concur. Satire billboards mocking Vance have begun to sprout in neighboring villages, residents have complained that security measures have closed them off, and even TV personality Jeremy Clarkson has commented on the chaos.

Even though Vance had intended for a restful holiday, the trip raised awareness of his peculiar relationship with the people both domestically and abroad. Even his admirers might dismiss the pub incident as unimportant. However, the opposition of the local establishment exacerbates his problem as a politician who struggles to strike a balance between his aristocratic authority and his outsider Hillbilly Elegy persona.
