The White Stripes leader and Grammy-winning musician Jack White has harshly blasted President Donald Trump’s slavish redecoration of the White House. After a high-profile meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, White posted on Instagram to denounce the president’s heavy usage of gold décor in the historic space.
In addition to saying, “Look at his disgusting taste, would you even buy a used car from this conman, let alone give him the nuclear codes?” he compared the makeover to a garish, gold-leafed, and vulgar professional wrestler’s dressing area.
White went one step further, mockingly imagining a pair of Trump shoes on either side of a gold-plated Trump bible on that mantle. He was extremely disappointed and described the remodeling as a disgrace to American history.
Trump and Zelensky were seated among gold-framed paintings, gold cherubs, trophies, and gilded mirrors—elements taken from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort—in the picture that went with White’s post.
Over the past few months, Trump has been progressively changing the White House, adding lavish golden accents to replace the previous administration’s muted decor. These include a new gold Trump crest over the building’s door, gold trophies primarily created in Europe, gilded Rococo-style mirrors, and gold appliqués on the fireplace.
Regarding the makeover, Trump claimed, “I picked it all myself.” I’m quite proud of that, describing his love of gold as a lucky charm and a mark of status. Additionally, he mentioned plans to honor 250 years of American independence by hosting a UFC bout on the White House grounds next year. White made fun of this concept in his Instagram caption, which read, “Can’t wait for the UFC match on the front lawn too, he’s almost fully achieved the movie Idiocracy.”
In an interview with the Daily Beast, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung retaliated to White’s scathing criticism. He referred to White as a washed-up, has-been loser who posts nonsense on social media because he obviously has a lot of free time because his career has stagnated.
“It’s clear he’s been masquerading as a real artist, because he fails to appreciate, and quite frankly disrespects, the splendor and significance of the Oval Office inside The People’s House,” Cheung said in defense of the Oval Office’s new appearance.

White’s current work defies Cheung’s assertion that the musician’s career has stagnated. White’s 2024 album No Name received a 2025 Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Album. Furthermore, he will be performing with legendary acts like Iggy Pop and the Sex Pistols at the CBGB Festival in Brooklyn next month.
Jack White has a history of vocally opposing Trump; on social media, he once called the president a Nazi clown and an evident fascist and would-be tyrant. After Trump used the White Stripes song “Seven Nation Army” without permission in a campaign video, White famously defended his music, threatening legal action with the venomous message, “Don’t even think about using my music you fascists.”

In contrast to Trump, White praised Zelensky as a REAL national leader in a black suit as he concluded his time in the White House. However, Trump is solely responsible for the opulent redesign of the Oval Office, which reflects his taste for gilded extravagance that is consistent with his other properties.
According to Barbara Res, a former vice president at the Trump Organization, Trump views gold ornamentation as a sign of riches and class, and his wish to gild everything created the appearance of taste and wealth.
Other modifications include paving the Rose Garden’s lawn, which Trump defended as a response to women’s concerns about their high heels digging into the grass.
