SPRINGVILLE It took a few quarters for Iowa Valley to recover from its rust.
After that, the Tigers were a well-oiled machine driven by a formidable defense and quarterback Nolan Kriegel.
In an eight-player high school football game Friday night at Allison Field, Kriegel ran for four touchdowns, 201 yards, three scores, and 136 yards after halftime as No. 5 Iowa Valley easily defeated Springville 45-9.
“We made some changes,” said Casey Krull, coach of the Iowa Valley. In the second half, it was evident that we were performing a little bit better.
With 16 points, Iowa Valley (1-0) scored a respectable amount for the top 8-Player teams. The Tigers weren’t happy with the productivity, so they concentrated on better blocking and made adjustments to open things up.
We’re a scoring-oriented squad, and we didn’t have many points at the beginning (of the second half), Kriegel stated. We emerged prepared to roll. We scored some touchdowns because we were prepared to do so.
Iowa Valley almost doubled their first-half total in less than three minutes.
Kriegel was restricted to just two double-digit runs by Springville in the first half, but after the interval, the all-state player displayed his explosiveness. Kriegel raced unimpeded down the right sideline for a 55-yard touchdown after faking a pitch left on the first play of the third.
According to Krull, that was enormous. As we were about to leave, we informed them that we needed to be prepared. It meant a lot to us that he could accomplish that. There, he sort of established the tone, but he doesn’t do it without everyone else doing their part first. We were able to put things behind us at last.
When he’s in space, he’s really unique. He has a lot of playmaking ability.
The next possession, which included Kriegel’s 48-yard scoring run, lasted just two plays. With 9:21 remaining in the third, Kriegel took the sweep to the left sideline, cut diagonally through players to the right side once more, and was out. This made the score 30-3.
Regarding the offensive line, Kriegel remarked, “They just made a hole for me.” It enabled me to complete my tasks. I’m good in the open field once I discover a hole. That’s what they did.
With 8:21 remaining, Kriegel completed the Tigers’ surge with a 13-yard touchdown run, and Chance Hoyt added a 5-yard TD run in the third to put the team ahead 45-3. For the Tigers, Dane Smith ran for 70 yards. Kriegel struck Josh Read for a 19-yard scoring run on the opening play of the second quarter, and he finished with 250 yards and five touchdowns.
Kriegel remarked, “We were running the ball run, run, run, run.” They clearly weren’t prepared, so we decided to try a pass. It was successful.
Springville was limited to 138 yards of total offense, including 38 yards in the air, by Iowa Valley’s defense. It wasn’t until the Orioles’ sixth and last possession of the first half that the Tigers gave up a first down and registered 11 tackles for loss.
Krull remarked, “We have some guys on defense that play really fast.” The way that Layne Peska comes down and sets our defense is excellent. The Hoyt brothers, Chance and Mason, are two of our linebackers who will simply fly to the football, dude. It’s entertaining to watch them men. Watching those three guys fly the ball and then having corners do a fantastic job of keeping on men is a lot of fun.
In order for everyone else to make plays, our (defensive) line takes on blocks. It was great to watch them play complimentary football tonight.
In the last seconds of the first half, Springville (0-1) scored. The Orioles got the ball at the Tigers 39 thanks to a strip and fumble recovery by Jace March.
Christian Anguiano’s 31-yard field goal gave the Orioles a 16-3 halftime lead after they drove to the 9.
Springville scored a touchdown late in the game. With 1:41 left, Braden Jordan scored on a 10-yard rush. With 15 carries and 104 rushing yards, Luke Lansing led Springville.
When Lone Tree canceled its varsity season owing to low attendance, a date became available for the game, which was not originally scheduled for either team.
Particularly before the Week 1 home game versus No. 8 Don Bosco, Iowa Valley preferred the contest over the previously scheduled intrasquad scrimmage.
According to Krull, “I think that helps our guys just knock off that rust and we have a whole game on film now because we had to play hard for four quarters.” Going into that week, we can see what has to be cleaned up since it will be a long game for us if we don’t.
Next week, Springville will host No. 7 Montezuma.
