Following a tragic event at her nursing home, 99-year-old Margaret Eluned Roberts of Wales passed suddenly. She was renowned for her independence and strong determination despite being blind. This regrettable incident happened on September 22, 2024, an apparently typical day at the Glan Rhos nursing home.
Roberts had a horrific accident, according to Kate Robertson, a senior coroner in northwest Wales. She spilled boiling tea all over herself, burning her leg.
Her health then began to deteriorate. After suffering severe burns from the tea, Mrs. Roberts, who was anticipating her 100th birthday in September 2025, ended up in the hospital. She then developed pneumonia and cellulitis, which made breathing extremely difficult. She was unable to manage these health concerns in addition to her other conditions, such as asthma and heart disease.
Her death occurred on October 28. Her health was deteriorating, therefore the coroner declared it an accident.
Robertson told his daughter, Linda Pritchard, that she wished to live to be 100 years old.
It would have been such an important turning point.

The home’s caretaker, Sarah Thomas, told WalesOnline that she had provided Roberts the tea since the elderly woman insisted on carrying the cup by herself. Thomas went so far as to characterize her typical conduct as highly independent.
However, the outcome of this specific instance of her independence was regrettable.

After the tea spill, Jo Reavey, a nurse at Glan Rhos, described finding Roberts upset and holding her arms up. Following her initial treatment at Ysbyty Gwynedd, the 99-year-old was briefly returned to her assisted living facility before being readmitted to the hospital.
She tragically died there after failing to recover.
