A transcript of a two-day interview with Ghislaine Maxwell was recently released by the Justice Department, and it reads like a political thriller. The imprisoned British socialite, who was formerly Jeffrey Epstein’s closest friend, claims in the shocking transcript that she never witnessed Donald Trump behave inappropriately and categorically rejects the existence of Epstein’s notorious client list. Online conspiracy theories will undoubtedly be sparked by that denial alone.
The Independent was able to view the transcript of Maxwell’s meeting with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. Maxwell spoke highly of Trump throughout their conversation, and Blanche is no stranger to political turmoil himself. She portrayed him as kind, courteous, and never inappropriate in her company, praising what she called his tremendous achievement of becoming president. Maxwell claimed to have seen Epstein and Trump together a few times but brushed off any hints that Trump’s actions were concerning. When asked if Trump had done anything wrong, she responded, “Never, ever, in any context.”

Maxwell had another shocking revelation for those who were still holding onto the illusive Epstein client list. She maintained that there is no such list, which is said to contain the names of international leaders, politicians, and celebrities connected to Epstein’s vile actions. She bluntly stated, “There is no list,” dispelling one of the most persistent conspiracy theories that have been going around in the MAGA community and beyond. However, many people are still certain that there are secrets hidden in the Epstein files, so her denial is unlikely to quell rumors.
Maxwell also offered his thoughts on one of the most contentious episodes in the Epstein story: his 2019 death in a New York jail cell. Epstein’s abrupt death, which was officially declared a suicide, has given rise to other speculations. Maxwell didn’t keep her doubts to herself. “I don’t think he committed suicide,” she said. When asked if she had any theories as to who might have killed him, she only said, “I don’t.” That insignificant remark is sufficient to fan the suspicions once more.

The Bill Clinton rumor comes next. Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s accusers, had stated that Maxwell had once flown Clinton to Epstein’s island in a helicopter. Numerous others have pointed to the anecdote as proof of Clinton’s tight relationship with the embattled financier. But Maxwell laughed at the notion. She claimed that the story as it is presented is blatantly ridiculous. It’s true that I fly helicopters. But I would be terrified if I were to fly a former president in a machine. I would never even accept that duty. Is it possible? Yes, no. She then brushed the accusation off as untrue, describing it as one of the many absurd stories associated with her name.
It was no accident that these transcripts were made public. The House Oversight Committee, which earlier this month issued subpoenas requesting the papers, has put significant pressure on the Justice Department to turn over further documents from Epstein’s criminal prosecution. Although it is uncertain when or how much of the data will actually be made public, the committee has pledged to make some of it available to the public. The abrupt disclosure of Maxwell’s remarks seems to be a step in that process, providing the public and Congress with a preview of what is kept within the DOJ’s vaults.

Whether Maxwell’s testimony provides any true clarity or only muddies the waters further is still up for debate. She disputes Clinton’s alleged helicopter journey, downplays Trump’s relationship with Epstein, and maintains that there was no client list. However, by casting doubt on Epstein’s suicide, she adds gasoline to the fire, a stance that is sure to stoke conspiracy theorists on both sides of the political spectrum.
The next big question is what will happen. Will some rumors be dispelled by these transcripts, or will they only lead to new arguments and charges? One thing is definite for the time being. The Epstein issue is far from over because of Maxwell’s talk with Todd Blanche, which has given conspiracy theorists, political junkies, and the internet a wealth of material to gnaw on.
