President Donald Trump has been enraged by California Governor Gavin Newsom’s pledge to “fight fire with fire.” In a threatening letter, Newsom warned Trump that California and perhaps other blue states would follow suit if he didn’t stop trying to gain congressional seats through aggressive gerrymandering in red states.
Trump continued the verbal altercation at a White House press briefing on Monday, using his usual childish slurs.Gavin Newscom is lacking in the required abilities. He has some good bullsh-t, but that’s about it. The indignant Trump screamed, “He is incompetent.”
To preserve the stout Republican majority in the U.S. House in the 2026 midterm elections, Trump instructed Texas Governor Greg Abbott two weeks prior to capture five congressional seats for him. Abott instructed state lawmakers to redistrict voting districts, which is normally done every ten years after the U.S. Census, in an unusual attempt at mid-decade gerrymandering. The goal was to remove five Democratic-held seats and give them to Republicans.
Texas Democrats have halted the redistricting process thus far by leaving the state last week. The Texas GOP fled to Illinois and other blue states to prevent them from securing a quorum, which is the bare minimum of lawmakers needed to pass any gerrymandering vote.

California cannot stand by while Texas and other Republican-led states try to carry out Trump’s directive to create congressional maps that favor Republicans, according to a letter that Newsom wrote to Trump on Monday, according to Politico.
“I will be forced to lead an effort to redraw the maps in California to offset the rigging of maps in red states if you will not step down,” Newsom stated. However, we will gladly halt our redistricting efforts if the other states do the same. And it will benefit American democracy.
He asserted that Trump’s redistricting plan was extremely politicized and an attempt to rig the upcoming midterm elections.
Knowing that California can undo any progress you hope to make, you are playing with fire and running the risk of upending our democracy, Newsom wrote. According to the Atlanta Black Star, this attempt to manipulate congressional districts in order to maintain power before the 2026 election even takes place is an insult to American democracy.

As you might anticipate, social media exploded along party lines. Naturally, MAGA voters backed Trump’s gerrymandering strategies and opposed Newsom.Trump’s opponents believe he is trying to manipulate the results of the midterm elections by gaining seats in the House of Representatives, where Republicans are predicted to lose their thin control.
