Prepare yourselves if the royal romance between Prince Andrew and Sarah Fergie Ferguson seems like a nightmare. It’s even dirtier than the tabloids of the 1990s ever said. Following their 1986 marriage, the Duke and Duchess of York separated in 1992 and got divorced in 1996.
To show how turbulent those early years were, a 2025 biography is tearing down the royal curtains. Royal writer Andrew Lownie’s book, The Rise and Fall of the House of York, describes a marriage characterized by infidelity, loneliness, and tension that occasionally even verged on domestic violence, according to those close to the couple.
The book claims that Ferguson sought companionship elsewhere after being largely abandoned when Prince Andrew was in the Navy. At the same time, in just his first year of marriage, Andrew had a ridiculous dozen indiscretions.
The disclosures are shocking but not entirely surprising to those who are familiar with Fergie’s sometimes turbulent royal career. She has long been candid about her struggles with the British press, the rigorous demands of royal life, and her own self-image. Lownie’s work, which suggests that their marriage had more wide-open fractures than microscopic cracks, further complicates this tale.
Although the wedding pictures seemed to depict a fairy tale romance, behind-the-scenes reality was everything but idyllic. Fergie told acquaintances about Andrew’s lack of interest, according to sources cited by Lownie. “I’m married to a man who has never been inside a supermarket,” Lownie writes.
Reports state that the couple’s arguments got out of control.
Sarah had to contend with tabloid brutality and public mockery as a result of Prince Andrew’s many Navy deployments. Princess Beatrice battled postpartum depression after giving birth in 1988, and the media mockingly called her the Duchess of Pork.
Notwithstanding the public’s admiration, their marriage was tainted by controversy and resentment. Sarah’s relationships and Andrew’s alleged recurrent infidelity, which had been featured on front pages, created their relationship as tabloid fodder.
The two are devoted friends rather than resentful ex-partners, which is what makes their recovery from this storm so amazing.
Even More Amazing Part 2 of Epstein and the Royal Family’s revelations

In the present day, Prince Andrew and Sarah’s relationship after their divorce is practically unreal.
They continue to nurture Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice together even after more than three decades of living apart. According to The Telegraph, Sarah has publicly backed Andrew since he has become the least popular royal due to his decline in popularity following the Jeffrey Epstein affair and his deteriorating approval ratings.
In a late 2024 interview with The Times, Fergie even declared that she would marry Prince Andrew again, without a doubt, calling him a wonderful man with a big heart. It’s a strange loyalty, particularly in light of the speculation that Prince William may attempt to further undermine his scandal-plagued uncle once he ascends to the throne.
Fergie stated to Glamour in 2023 that she thinks forgiveness is essential and that the three C’s—communication, compromise, and compassion—are important. Perhaps this is how she reconciled with King Charles III, restored her reputation, and separated from the royal family.

Although she and Prince Andrew are unlikely to reconcile, their shared residence and united front have made them one of the royal family’s most unusual (and strangely charming) alliances.
Despite their problems, Sarah and Andrew demonstrated that, at least in their instance, divorce does not equate to division!
