On Monday night, the Newton baseball team defeated Pella Christian in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader, securing the season series. The Cardinals won 6-5 in the first game, which saw three lead changes in the final two innings, while Pella Christian won the nightcap 16-1 in just four innings. The second game was televised live on the KRLS3 Stream.
Newton took advantage of a double by Creighton Andrew, a ground out run batted in by Gabe Otto, and a few errors by the Eagles to score the opening two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning of the opener. Pella Christian recovered and seized the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, drawing two walks and scored five runs on hits from Conner Van Zee, Eliot Menninga, and Grant Kelderman. With four runs in the top of the seven, the Cardinals regained the lead. Cade Bauer hit the first two of those runs home to left field, and Dakota Winkleman batted the last run. The winning run was then scored after Skyler Millheiser hit a ball on the right side of the infield, which skipped over the head of the second baseman. In the first game, Pella Christian had seven hits, two walks, and three errors, while Newton had nine hits, four walks, and two errors.
The Eagles scored their 16 runs on 11 hits, 9 walks, and 6 Cardinals errors, making it a nightcap that was all Eagles. In the second game, Newton only managed three hits and capitalized on one of three mistakes made by Pella Christian. Newton scored his only run in the top of the fourth inning after the Eagles scored six runs in the first, four in the second, and six in the third. In the Eagles’ second game, Logan Gallaher was two for three with three runs batted in, while Garrett Weilard was three for three with four runs batted in.
Pella Christian will resume conference action on Wednesday at Norwalk at 7 p.m.; they are currently 1-12 in league games and 5-15 overall. The KNIA3 stream will broadcast the Eagles vs. Warriors game live, starting at 6:45 p.m. with pregame programming. With Monday’s results, the Cardinals are now 4-13 overall and 2-10 in conference play. They will play again tonight at 7 p.m. in Knoxville.
