The Newton softball and baseball teams dropped Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheaders to the top-seeded Mustang teams on Wednesday when they traveled to Dallas Center-Grimes.
The Cardinals baseball team was defeated 11-1 in five innings by the Class 4A #15 Dallas Center-Grimes in game one, and then 15-2 in four innings in game two. Lane Rozendaal led the way with a double, a single, and an RBI as Newton amassed four hits in the first inning. Cade Bauer had a single and Derek Wermager had a triple. In the first inning, the Cardinals made two mistakes and walked seven batters as they battled defensively. Newton recorded three hits, four walks, three batter hits, and one batter reaching on an error in game two. Bauer, Kreytein Wickliffe, and Creighton Andrew all had singles that were hits. The Cardinals finished 4-20 overall and 2-16 in conference play.
The Newton softball team lost the first game 10-0 in three innings and the second game 8-0 after failing to score against the Class 4A #3 Mustangs. Newton gave up five stolen bases and made four mistakes in the first inning, while Chloe Swank had the Cardinals’ only hit. Ava Williams went two for two in the nightcap, while the Cardinals also had hits from Mack Sims and Swank. In the second game, the Mustangs took advantage of two Newton errors to stole eight bases. The Cardinals fell to 6-17 overall and 2-15 in league play.
The softball team will be back on the diamond on Friday night against Des Moines East, and the Newton baseball team will play again on Friday at Winterset.
