The Cardinal softball team defeated Des Moines East 12–4 on the road, while the Newton baseball team dropped a ten-inning game in Winterset 5–4 on Friday.
The fourth inning was when Newton’s baseball team scored all four of their runs. Cade Bauer batted in two runs and went three for five. Lane Rozendaal and Dakota Winkleman batted in the other two runs. Mason Mendez, who went two for three, had a strong night at the plate for the Cardinals as well. Over the course of the ten innings, Newton utilized three different pitchers. Dakota Winkleman pitched the first six innings, allowing four runs on six hits, three of which were earned. He hit one batter and struck out seven. Derek Wermager struck out five batters in three shutout innings while allowing one hit and hitting one. After pitching one inning, Gabe Otto allowed two hits and one earned run. Winterset had nine hits, three stolen bases, and two errors, while the Cardinals had seven hits, five walks, and two errors.
The Newton softball team defeated Des Moines East to snap an eight-game losing run. The Cardinals scored four runs in the fifth inning, six in the fourth, and one in each of the first and third innings. To Des Moines East’s seven hits, Newton hammered out fourteen. Mack Sims scored three runs and recorded four hits in four at-bats for the Cardinals. Chloe Swank went two for four with a home run and three runs batted in, while Makenzly Brant went two for three and batted in four runs. Newton also had home runs from Leileigh Hammons and Ava Williams.
The Cardinals softball team, which is now 7-17 on the season, will play Indianola at home on Monday afternoon after being behind 13-6 in the top of the fourth inning due to rain. The Newton baseball team lost 4–21 and will play Bettendorf in a doubleheader at North Polk Middle School today starting at 2:30 p.m. in the Brent Plange Classic.
