The Newton softball team lost to West Marshall 3-2 in a walk-off fashion on Wednesday after traveling to State Center.
Prior to the Trojans scoring two runs in their half of the fourth inning, the Cardinals led 1-0 after scoring the game’s first run in the first inning. West Marshall scored a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning with two outs to win the game after Newton tied the score at two in the top half of the inning. Newton went 2-3 with a double and a solo homer, and all of her runs were scored by Cardinals lead-off batter Mack Sims. Additionally, Chloe Swank went 3–4 with a run batted in during her multi-hit game for Newton. Seven hits, three walks, one hit batter, and one stolen base were all recorded by the Cardinals. After pitching 6.2 innings and allowing six hits, two earned runs, and three strikeouts, Leileigh Hammons was defeated.
After dropping to 8-18 overall for the season, the Newton Softball team will play Class 2A #15 East Marshall on the road today at 7 p.m. in Le Grand.
