Newton’s Softball Team Edges Fort Madison In Iowa City

The Newton softball team defeated Fort Madison 7–6 on Bob Pearl Field at the University of Iowa on Tuesday, earning them a non-conference victory in Iowa City.

The Bloodhounds pulled ahead 6-5 in the top half of the sixth inning after the Cardinals had taken a 5-0 lead going into the inning. Newton scored the game’s final two runs in the bottom half of the sixth to regain the lead. Kenzly Brant, a rookie, knocked in two runs and went 2-3 for the Cardinals. Mack Sims, Chloe Swank, Ava Williams, Laileigh Hammons, and Paige Benson contributed the last five runs. Newton had six batters reach on Fort Madison errors, but both teams tallied seven hits. With four strikeouts, four walks, and three earned runs allowed, Hammons pitched the entire game for the Cardinals.

The Newton softball team, which now stands at 8-18 overall, will play West Marshall tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the State Center.
