At the DC-G Classic on Thursday, the Norwalk softball team significantly improved their record, defeating Ballard and Johnston by a combined score of 21–4. Ballard, on the other hand, swept the Norwalk baseball team in a doubleheader that was not in the league.
Softball wins two
The third-ranked Warrior softball team in Class 4A defeated Ballard 13-3 then defeated 5A fifth-ranked Johnston 8-1 to end a two-game losing streak.
In just four innings, Norwalk amassed 16 hits in the Ballard game. With four doubles, eight runs scored, and seven RBI between them, Nyah Hulbert, Bailey Birmingham, and Carly Brewer all went 3-for-4 at the plate. Hadley Michael, Cambry Livingston, and Maddie Gullion all went 2-for-3, with Livingston scoring four runs. Ava Garvey walked twice and added a double. Leah Crick won the game by pitching all four innings.
Hulbert went 3-for-3 with a single, double, and triple, two runs, and two RBI in another strong game against Johnston. She had four extra-base hits and went 6-for-7 for the day. Haily Hook and Carly Brewer each contributed a single and two RBI, while Gullion hit two singles. The Warriors ended the game early, scoring five runs in the sixth. During a full game, Brewer gave up one run and five hits.
With a 29-5 record overall, Norwalk will play again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they host Dubuque Wahlert in a doubleheader.
The Bombers swept the baseball team.
At Slater’s Nite Hawk Baseball Diamond, fourth-ranked Ballard of Class 3A swept Norwalk, defeating the Warriors 5-0 and 12-2 in six innings.
In game one, Norwalk made five mistakes, behind Ashton Hans and Konner Holtorf, the pitchers. After giving up four earned runs and seven hits in four innings, Hans was declared the loser. The Warrior offense was led by Rhylee Schmidt, who went two for two and had an RBI. Ryan Jones and Colton Moore both hit doubles.
In game two, Norwalk struck out 11 times and was shut out on one hit. Briley Purcell pitched five innings and suffered the loss after Jones singled for the only hit. He gave up seven free passes despite only allowing three hits. Ballard improved to 25-7 after pulling away with three runs in the sixth.
The Warriors, who are currently 12-16 overall, will host ADM on Tuesday night to wrap off the regular season.
