Norwalk summer sports teams notch wins over Bondurant-Farrar

On Monday night, Bondurant-Farrar was trounced by the Norwalk softball and baseball teams in non-conference play. A baseball doubleheader saw the Warriors win game one 8–5, while game two was postponed due to rain and lightning in the fourth inning with a 1–1 tie. In softball, Norwalk defeated the Bluejays 1-0.

Baseball

In a game when both teams made at least three mistakes, the Warrior baseball team moved to 9-8 overall. Norwalk led 5-1 after scoring four runs in the bottom of the third and won 8-5 with a two-run sixth. Xavier Bush and Rhylee Schmidt both drove in a pair of runs, while Eli Benschoter led the hitting onslaught with two doubles and two runs scored. Brady Wilkening was 2-for-2 with one RBI, and Bush went 2-for-3 with a double.

In five innings pitched, Cole Wardlow gave up just two earned runs and six hits, improving his record to 3-2. Ashton Hans recorded the final four outs for his first save after Wardlow had struck out six hitters. On Wednesday, the Warriors will host Pella Christian at 7:00 p.m. to resume play in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Softball

Class 4A fourth-ranked Norwalk defeated the 4A 11th-ranked Bluejays 1-0 in a pitchers’ battle on the softball diamond. Bailey Birmingham hit her seventh home run of the season in the fourth inning to give the only run. The Warriors hit out eight times, with singles from Maddie Gullion, Carly Brewer, and Nyah Hulbert. With six strikeouts and seven hits scattered, Brewer recorded a shutout in the circle.

Today at 3:00 p.m., Norwalk will play a doubleheader against Davenport Central, where they have improved to 17-2 overall.
