On Thursday, Mother Nature once again got in the way of the Norwalk softball team’s plans to set a new 21-hour record.
The Class 4A third-ranked Warriors returned to their home diamond Thursday morning and completed a 9-0 victory over Oskaloosa that began on Monday, following a sweeping doubleheader over Indianola on Wednesday night. When play was halted by lightning and rain in the top of the fifth, Norwalk led the 4A second-ranked Mustangs 2-0 after a brief bus ride to Dallas Center-Grimes for a game postponed until noon due to weather concerns. The Warriors aim to force a tie for first place in the Little Hawkeye Conference standings when they return to DC-G on Monday and play again at 12:00 p.m.
Norwalk is currently 14-2 in conference play and 25-3 overall. DC-G has only suffered one conference loss, after splitting a doubleheader at Norwalk on June 11.
Play was halted Monday after the Warriors had a 4-0 lead over Oskaloosa in the fourth inning. They quickly defeated the Indians 9-0 in five games. The combined two-hit performances of Nyah Hulbert, Bailey Birmingham, Carly Brewer, Maddie Gullion, and Dani Peters resulted in six runs scored and seven RBI. Birmingham scored three runs and had a triple. Brewer drove in three, and Peters hit a double. Leah Crick worked the fifth inning to finish the shutout after Brewer tossed four scoreless innings and struck out eight.
Hulbert opened the game at DC-G with her 15th home run of the year, and Gullion doubled for an RBI in the third.
It rained out at Norwalk Baseball.
On Thursday, the Norwalk baseball team was supposed to finish their postponed game against Oskaloosa, but the game was canceled due to approaching thunderstorms. When play was halted on Monday, the Indians were ahead 5-1 in the fourth inning.
Tonight at 7:00 p.m., the Warriors will travel to Dallas Center-Grimes to play a conference game. Earlier this season, the two teams split a doubleheader.
