Pella Softball Team Walks-Off in Back-and-Forth Tilt with Newton

In a close back-and-forth softball game at Pella Middle School on Thursday, the home team prevailed 5–4 over Newton, giving the Dutch girls a season sweep. The game was broadcast live on KRLS2.

After heavy rain on Wednesday caused the game to be stopped, Newton stranded a runner at third, and the action resumed in the top of the first. Katie Scheckel of Pella opened the scoring with a double to left center field. The Cardinals responded in the top of the third, as the road team took its first lead over Pella this summer thanks to an RBI single by Chloe Swank and a Dutch throwing error.

After a flyout, a Cardinal throwing mistake in the bottom of the fifth would give the Dutch the lead. After another Dutch response in the opposite half, the Cardinals would score a run to regain the lead in the top of the sixth. Before giving up two one-out baserunners in the last inning, Newton would take the lead once more in the seventh. Ella Hiemstra scored the two runs to walk off a winner after sneaking a line drive just inside the third base bag.

Leileigh Hammons, who gave up four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings and had three hits, including the game-winning RBI in the seventh, kept the Dutch in check despite the defeat. Emma Eekhoff allowed two earned runs in the circle while striking out six batters in seven innings.

Pella welcomes #2 in Class 4A Norwalk to town for a doubleheader this evening, improving to 9-8 overall and 7-6 in the conference. Pella Dutch Live and 92.1 KRLS will broadcast the second game of the twin bill. Newton hosts Oskaloosa for two games tonight and is at 6-13 overall and 2-11 in league play.
