CEDAR RAPIDS A significant data center project in Cedar Rapids has canceled its groundbreaking.

On Tuesday morning, company executives and state and local politicians were planned to witness the groundbreaking for the $750 million QTS data center project in southwest Cedar Rapids.

However, in the wake of a deadly shooting at an office building in Manhattan, the business made the announcement late Monday. According to the Associated Press, Wesley LePatner, a Blackstone employee, was one of four people killed in the shooting.

The Cedar Rapids groundbreaking was canceled out of respect for the victims, their families, and coworkers since QTS is a Blackstone portfolio business.

In an email, a QTS representative stated that this decision was made in reaction to the unfortunate incident that occurred in New York on Monday. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected because we genuinely care about the communities in which we live and work.

Two significant data center developments are planned for the Big Cedar Industrial Center, including the QTS facility. The second is a Google data center campus that will cost $576 million.

Computer servers, data storage, and other devices that store and retrieve data for end users are all housed in a data center. The number of data center projects around the country is increasing due to advancements in artificial intelligence and cloud-hosted data.
