Heath Moenck, the track and field director at Simpson College, declared on Wednesday that Ashlan Burton and James Hoffman will be given new positions in the department.Burton will become the next associate head coach, while Hoffman, the associate head coach of track and field, will be promoted to head coach.

The Simpson track and field programs have reached unprecedented heights since 2023, as evidenced by Spencer Moon’s 2024 national victory in the 10,000-meter race. Together, the women’s and men’s programs have produced 63 A-R-C All-Academic awards, 14 USTFCCCA All-Region selections, 28 A-R-C All-Conference picks, and 14 NCAA All-Americans.

After graduating from Simpson in 2006, Hoffman worked as a football coach before becoming an assistant coach with an emphasis on sprints for the track and field team. In August 2023, Hoffman took over as associate head coach.

In June 2023, Burton became a member of the Storm coaching staff and worked mostly with the throwers. At the University of Central Missouri, Burton was named an NCAA Division II All-American seven times. In the shot put, hammer, discus, and javelin, Storm throwers have accumulated several top-10 school scores since 2023.

As the Storm build on their recent national success on and off the track, Hoffman and Burton’s promotions usher in an exciting new era for Simpson track and field.
