This Man Honored His Mother’s Wish and Gave Her Gold Jewelry to His Bride—But It Cost Him His Sister Forever

A man presenting his married bride with the gold jewelry his mother had valued, as she had requested, should have been a touching moment at the start of a marriage. However, it devolved into a major drama that ultimately tore their family apart permanently, rather than fostering harmony.

This individual, who goes by the handle @Just-Usual4378, posted a graphic narrative on the Reddit topic r/AITA. It has since gone viral and, as of this writing, Reddit’s filters have deleted it.

The original poster described a wedding present that led to a heated dispute with his younger sister.

The agreement was that his mother had given him some gold jewelry that had been handed down through the centuries and instructed him to give it to his wife. As his mother had requested, he gave it to his bride at the wedding, in front of everyone they knew. However, that’s where things took a turn for the worse.

However, his sister was not amenable to it. He mentioned a necklace and some bangle bracelets that she had eyed since they were young, adding that she insisted that our mother’s stuff belonged to her. She refused to move, despite his attempts to explain that it is customary in their culture to offer these pieces to the daughter-in-law.

Then, according to commentators, the wife took charge and did something benevolent, like a saint would. To defuse the situation, she recommended returning the necklace. At last, the brother consented, but only if she would accept everything. We all disagree, but he contacted his sister and said she could take them. Since I’ll make the identical jewelry for my wife, which will pain her, I want her to avoid us. It’s not yours in the first place; it belongs to our mother.

And what do you know? His sister was giggling and joyful.

So she went out. He no longer communicates with his mother. They remained uninterested even after the sister promised to return the jewelry. He continued by saying, “My wife has a different opinion, but honestly, it doesn’t matter to us.”

Reddit felt conflicted.

Despite feeling terrible about what had happened, one person believed the wife’s generosity was admirable: Is giving jewelry to a son’s wife a true family custom, or did your mother think of this because you’re her special boy who can’t do anything wrong? The OP said, “She even offered to return it, but we don’t care,” which raised suspicions.

Another user questioned the mother’s judgment: You allowed your mother to completely surprise your sister in the first place. Like your wife, your sister had every right to the jewelry. Your mother deliberately forgot about [your sister]. Given that you are both misogynists, it is understandable why.

Although the sister currently owns the gold, don’t you think the emotional toll of the circumstance may outweigh the carat worth of the gold?
