White Man Fires at Black Jogger for No Reason—Horrific Hate Crime Caught on CCTV

Surveillance footage of Jonathan Felkel, a white man from South Carolina, showing him shooting a black man jogging alongside the road with his rifle. Additionally, Felkel yelled racist epithets at the Black man. He is currently being held on a $1 million bond.

According to WRDW and WLTX, police have stated that the crime occurred in Richland County on July 17 at 6 a.m. Felkel was sitting in his car in front of a gated community when the Black man jogged past, according to the surveillance footage that showed him firing the gun. He then seized the weapon and fired.

According to the Atlanta Black Star, Felkel has been charged with hate crimes, possession of a weapon during a violent incident, and high and aggravated assault and battery. The footage also revealed that he yelled at the victim, “Keep running, boy.”

When questioned about the act he had done after his arrest, Felkel stated, “I was really going to do something at first and then,” because he was alone. I was going to shoot at him, he claimed when he was asked to clarify his remarks. Yes, I was. I intended to shoot him.

It was evident from Felkel’s testimony that he had chosen to shoot the other individual because of the color of their skin. It is interesting to note that although they live in the same area, he and his victim—who was thankfully unharmed by Felkel’s attack—do not know one another.

Felkel has been prosecuted under Richland County’s new hate crime code, which officials enacted in June, even though South Carolina does not have a state hate crime law, according to the Atlanta Black Star. Naturally, Felkel’s actions have caused anxiety among South Carolina’s Black community, leading to calls for the state to enact its own hate crime legislation.

One Richland County resident shared his thoughts about the incident: “That man just felt like he could do that, and nothing that he felt like was stopping him from doing that.” Therefore, I do believe that we need a legislation, or at the very least, additional information about this ordinance.

“Being in this neighborhood makes me feel uneasy,” another neighbor stated. It’s terribly regrettable. I feel a little frightened knowing that incidents like this continue to occur in this day and age, especially with children growing up nearby.

According to the Atlanta Black Star, a court issued a $1 million cash bond for Felkel’s assault charge and the highest permitted bond of $1,075 for the hate intimidation allegation.

Additionally, it should be mentioned that Felkel has rejected a public defender and that he will be placed under house arrest prior to his September court appearance if he is unable to pay the bond sum.
